Gift Ideas For Eco-Conscious Friends and Family
With Christmas fast approaching, our thoughts have turned to preparing for the festive season.
But this year lots of people are trying to have a more ethical and eco-friendly Christmas. Many of us are trying to buy organic, fair-trade products and at the same time cut down on plastic waste. So buying for friends and family might take a bit more thought.
This doesn’t mean an end to the festive fun. In fact, embracing these changes can offer a refreshing alternative, to the excesses that Christmas often brings.
It’s a chance to support small businesses around the country, who are doing their best to be kind to the planet.
So here are our top five Christmas gift ideas for eco-conscious friends and family.
1. Finding a gift for a friend who’s trying to change to a zero-waste lifestyle might seem like a challenge. On the contrary, there are many ethically produced products out there, which make it easier to avoid using plastic.
Reusable produce bags, stainless steel drinking straws, beeswax wraps and natural fibre brushes, would all be gratefully received in a zero-waste household.
You can find a great range of plastic free homeware items at InGreens online shop.
3. Handmade Organic toiletries make great stocking fillers for those wanting to be kinder to the environment.
There are lots of small, local producers of organic soaps and shampoos. Many of these also have plastic free packaging, a double dose of goodness!
Local Christmas markets are a great place to find handmade toiletries, but there are also a growing number of online suppliers.
Try Fresh Handmade Cosmetics for a great range of organic, plastic free treats for your skin.
4. We visited a local toyshop recently and realised just how much the toy industry is dominated by plastic.
But away from the high street, small producers are creating some beautiful wooden toys. A perfect choice for the children in your life this Christmas.
A word of warning here. I recently ordered a wooden hammering bench for our 10 month old and was very disappointed to find that it had plastic parts underneath. So check that you know what you’re getting!
5. Give something a new home and buy second-hand. We have already got some great stocking fillers for our kids from the local auction house and charity shops. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what they are because our kids read our blog.
There are some real treasures out there and anyone who’s serious about cutting down on their waste will be happy to receive a preloved gift. So get hunting.
Of course our organic cotton t-shirts also make great Christmas gifts. You can order from us online or you can come and see us at The Big Sheep Christmas Market in Bideford on the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd December.
We will be joined by 20 local producers of food and drink in the food barn and over 40 makers in the craft marquee.
